About the Grind

The Dental Grind explains how a dental practice actually works: where the money comes from, where it goes, and the decisions that change both. It started as a newsletter for dental students and new dentists. Now it's a podcast too.

Who's behind it

Ryan Smith, DDS, is a general dentist who owns and runs dental practices in the Portland, Oregon area. He also runs a dental assisting school and founded TheDentalMachine.com, a buying group and community for dentists. He has also owned a dental lab, a dental supply company and a handpiece repair company, so he has seen the invoices from both sides. He makes videos about the business side of dentistry on YouTube.

What you get

  • One email every Monday morning, on one part of the practice, in about five minutes of reading.
  • A podcast episode on the same idea, for the commute.
  • An archive of explainers you can come back to before you sign a PPO contract, an associate agreement or a purchase offer.

How we use numbers

Every number has a source. Either it links to published data, or it comes from a practice Ryan runs, with anything that identifies patients, staff or the office taken out. When a number is an estimate, we say so.

What this isn't

It isn't legal, tax or financial advice, and nobody here is selling you a consulting call. Use it to ask better questions of your CPA, attorney and lender.

Get in touch

Reply to any issue of the newsletter. It goes straight to Ryan.
